Anxiety Counselling in Nelson, BC
Quiet the Worry. Come Back to Yourself.
Anxiety can feel like it takes over — tightening the body, speeding up thoughts, and making even simple things feel overwhelming. It may show up as fear, stress, racing thoughts, irritability, difficulty sleeping, or a sense that you’re never fully at ease. If you’re struggling with anxiety, you’re not alone — and nothing is “wrong” with you. Your nervous system has learned to work overtime to keep you safe.
With support, understanding, and the right approach, anxiety can soften. There is a way back to steadiness, confidence, and joy. I offer anxiety counselling to individuals in Nelson, BC and online across British Columbia.
How Anxiety Shows Up
How Anxiety Shows Up
Anxiety doesn’t look the same for everyone. It may arrive suddenly or build slowly over time.
You might notice:
- recurring worry or racing thoughts
- tension in the body
- difficulty sleeping
- irritability or overwhelm
- avoidance of certain places or situations
- panic attacks
- intrusive thoughts or compulsive behaviour
- fear of being judged or evaluated
- lingering fear after trauma
Some people have a formal diagnosis like:
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
- Social Anxiety
- PTSD
- OCD
Others simply know something feels off. Both are valid — and both deserve care.
My Approach to Treating Anxiety
Anxiety counselling shouldn’t be cold or clinical. At its heart, it is relational work — a space to slow down, notice what’s happening inside, and reconnect with a sense of safety.
My approach draws primarily from:
- EFIT (Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy)
- Coherence Therapy
- Internal Family Systems (IFS)
These modalities help us understand anxiety not as a problem to “get rid of,” but as a meaningful protector — often rooted in experiences where you felt unsafe, unseen, or overwhelmed.
Together, we gently explore:
- what your anxiety is trying to protect you from
- where emotional patterns originated
- what younger parts of you still need
- how the nervous system learned to stay activated
From there, we can help your system update old emotional learnings (Coherence Therapy), strengthen internal security (EFIT), and build compassion for the inner parts trying to help (IFS). This work can be deeply relieving — and deeply empowering.
Anxiety & Emotional Safety
Anxiety isn’t just in the mind. It lives in the nervous system and in emotional memory.
Our work includes:
- grounding and nervous-system regulation
- befriending protective parts
- processing emotional experiences gently and safely
- reshaping patterns through memory reconsolidation
- reconnecting with inner strength and agency
As safety grows, anxiety often becomes less overwhelming — not because you’ve forced it down, but because your system no longer needs it in the same way.
Signs Therapy Might Help
You might benefit from anxiety counselling if you:
- feel overwhelmed much of the time
- struggle to relax
- constantly anticipate the worst
- avoid situations because of fear
- feel “on edge,” tense, or easily startled
- have trouble concentrating or sleeping
- feel controlled by worry or panic
You don’t need a diagnosis to reach out. Curiosity alone is enough.
What Sessions Feel Like
People often describe therapy with me as:
- warm
- grounding
- collaborative
- gentle and experiential
There is no pressure to perform or to change quickly. We go at a pace that feels manageable.
You can expect:
- space to breathe
- gentle exploration of emotion
- curiosity rather than judgment
- noticing body sensations and inner responses
- guidance in understanding patterns and parts
- support in creating new internal experiences
In time, anxiety becomes less of an enemy — and more of a messenger whose job can be updated.
How This Work Helps
Through individual therapy, people often experience:
- calmer body and mind
- insight into emotional patterns
- increased self-compassion
- more flexible responses to stress
- less avoidance
- deeper sense of inner safety
- renewed confidence and purpose
It’s not about forcing anxiety to disappear. It’s about helping your system feel safe enough that anxiety no longer needs to work so hard.
Why Work With Me
For nearly three decades I’ve supported individuals and organizations through complexity, stress, and change. I bring that experience — along with ongoing training in evidence-informed therapies — into this work.
My practice is grounded in:
- compassion
- curiosity
- cultural humility
- respect for lived experience
- a belief in your inner wisdom
You are not a problem to solve. You are a whole person with a story that makes sense.
My role is to help you explore your inner world with warmth and bravery — and to support you as you reconnect with a more grounded, expansive version of yourself.
