Somatic Counselling

Somatic Counselling in Nelson, BC

Reconnect With Your Body. Come Home to Yourself.

Many of us spend years — even decades — living mostly from the neck up. We manage, plan, think, and problem-solve, often without noticing what our emotional lives are asking for. Over time, this can leave us feeling disconnected, overwhelmed, anxious, or numb.

Somatic counselling offers a different way.
It invites you to listen to the wisdom of your body — because your body remembers.

When we learn to make space for sensation, emotion, and nervous system rhythms, we gain access to parts of ourselves that talk-based approaches alone sometimes can’t reach.

I offer somatic counselling in Nelson, BC and online across British Columbia. Sessions are gentle, curious, and tailored to your pace.

What Is Somatic Counselling?

Somatic counselling is a body-based therapeutic approach that supports emotional healing by helping you notice and work with sensation, movement, breath, and nervous system responses.

Rather than asking you to “think your way out” of distress, somatic work helps you:

  • slow down
  • notice what is happening in your body
  • build inner safety
  • process unresolved emotional experiences
  • reconnect with a sense of aliveness and wholeness

It is especially supportive for anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic stress, and emotional disconnection.

Because trauma is stored not just in memory but in the nervous system, somatic therapy helps gently renegotiate what is stuck — so you can move forward with more ease.

How Somatic Therapy Helps

Somatic counselling helps you:

  • understand your nervous system responses
  • release stored tension
  • feel more present and grounded
  • increase emotional capacity
  • reconnect with your intuition and needs
  • reduce anxiety and hypervigilance
  • soften patterns of shutdown or collapse

When you learn to listen to your body, you begin to understand what it has been trying to protect you from — sometimes for years.

This work is not about pushing or forcing change.
It is about creating enough safety that your body can naturally let go.

My Integrative, Body-Based Approach

While somatic awareness is central, I weave it into a broader relational and experiential approach that includes:

  • EFIT (Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy)
  • Coherence Therapy
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)
  • mindfulness and breathwork
  • trauma-informed somatic practices

These modalities complement each other beautifully:

EFIT

Helps reconnect you to core emotion and attachment needs, supporting deeper safety and self-compassion.

Uncovers and transforms emotional learnings held in memory — often expressed through the body — enabling lasting change via memory reconsolidation.

Invites curiosity toward protective parts, working compassionately with inner systems that hold emotion, fear, and vulnerability.

Together, these approaches help both mind and body shift — gently, at your pace.

Somatic Practices We May Use

Each session is grounded in collaboration and choice.
You’ll never be asked to do anything that doesn’t feel safe.

Possible practices include:

  • mindful awareness of sensation
  • grounding/orienting to the present moment
  • pendulation (moving gently between activation + calm)
  • titration (taking in small, manageable steps)
  • breath and movement practices
  • resourcing (connecting to internal + external supports)
  • supportive touch awareness (always optional and non-contact)

These practices help your nervous system learn that it no longer needs to stay in protection mode — and can return to connection and ease.

Who Might Benefit From Somatic Counselling?

Somatic therapy can be a fit if you:

  • feel disconnected from your body
  • struggle with anxiety, panic, or chronic stress
  • experience numbness, shutdown, or overwhelm
  • have difficulty trusting others
  • carry trauma or PTSD
  • notice persistent muscle tension
  • feel stuck in patterns of collapse or avoidance
  • long for more presence and emotional depth

Somatic counselling helps you reconnect with your body’s wisdom — and move through the world with more clarity, grounding, and choice.

What Sessions Feel Like

Working somatically is:

  • gentle
  • present-moment oriented
  • collaborative
  • slow enough to feel safe

Sessions may include talking, noticing, pausing, and sensing.
There is no right way to be here.

Our goal is simply to explore what your body is communicating — and to create new experiences of safety, connection, and grounding.

Why Work With Me

I bring nearly three decades of experience walking with people through transition, difficulty, and change. My work is grounded in:

  • emotional attunement
  • trauma-informed practice
  • cultural humility
  • nervous system science
  • deep respect for inner wisdom

I don’t see you as someone who needs to be fixed.
I see you as whole — with protective patterns that formed for very good reasons.

Together, we listen to your body’s story with care and curiosity, guided by what feels safe and possible.
