Trauma Counselling in Nelson, BC

Reconnect with Yourself. Heal at Your Pace.

Trauma impacts us in deep and often surprising ways. It can shape how we think, feel, relate, and move through the world. It may leave us feeling disconnected from ourselves, overwhelmed by emotion, or stuck in patterns that once kept us safe, but now feel limiting or painful.

If you recognize yourself in any of this, you’re not alone — and it’s not your fault.
With care, support, and the right therapeutic approach, healing is possible.

I offer trauma counselling for individuals in Nelson, BC and online across British Columbia. We move slowly and gently, helping your nervous system, body, and emotional world find their way back to safety, connection, and wholeness.

Understanding Trauma

Trauma isn’t defined by the event itself, but by how the nervous system was overwhelmed during it. When something frightening, confusing, or violating happens, our body does its best to protect us. Sometimes those survival responses linger long after the danger has passed.

Trauma can show up as:

  • anxiety or hypervigilance
  • emotional numbing or shutdown
  • difficulty trusting others
  • intrusive memories or nightmares
  • feeling unsafe in your own body
  • shame or self-criticism
  • chronic tension or pain
  • difficulty relaxing or feeling joy
  • patterns of adapting, pleasing, or over-functioning

These responses are not signs of weakness.
They were adaptive — an attempt to survive.

Therapy helps you understand these patterns, meet them with compassion, and gradually release what no longer serves you.

My Approach to Trauma Healing

Trauma healing is relational. Safety and connection are the foundation.

My work integrates:

  • EFIT (Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy)
  • Coherence Therapy
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)
  • mindfulness and somatic awareness
  • attachment science

These approaches complement one another, helping us:

  • connect with core emotions in a safe way (EFIT)
  • uncover and transform emotional patterns at their roots (Coherence Therapy)
  • compassionately welcome and heal inner protective parts (IFS)
  • develop stronger self-trust and internal stability

Together, they support deep, experiential change — not just coping.

A Pathway Toward Safety and Connection

1) Establishing Safety

We begin by building safety — inside the room, in your nervous system, and in your relationships.
This often includes:

  • grounding strategies
  • noticing sensation gently
  • orienting to the present moment
  • listening to your body’s cues

Safety is not rushed; it unfolds at your pace.

Your emotional and behavioural patterns existed for good reasons.
In IFS and EFIT, we get curious about:

  • how these patterns once protected you
  • what they are afraid might happen if they softened
  • what younger parts of you still need

This work is gentle and collaborative — we never force change.

In EFIT/EFIT &Coherence Therapy, we explore emotional learnings that became wired into your nervous system. When these emotional truths are brought into conscious awareness alongside new contradictory experiences, they can transform through memory reconsolidation — the brain’s natural mechanism for updating emotional learning.

Clients often describe this as:

“Something just shifted; the old pattern doesn’t hold the same power anymore.”

This is the heart of long-term change.

As parts of you heal and emotional patterns reorganize, you may feel:

  • greater ease in your body
  • more emotional flexibility
  • increased self-compassion
  • a stronger sense of inner safety
  • more connected relationships
  • an ability to move forward with clarity

Trauma healing is not about erasing the past; it’s about becoming free to live more fully in the present.

Trauma healing is not about erasing the past; it’s about becoming free to live more fully in the present.

How Trauma Counselling Can Help

Trauma-informed therapy can support you in:

  • easing anxiety and overwhelm
  • understanding emotional reactions
  • releasing shame and self-judgment
  • healing relational wounds
  • processing past experiences
  • building inner safety
  • reconnecting with your values and purpose
  • strengthening your capacity for joy and closeness

Over time, many people feel more grounded, empowered, and connected — both to themselves and to others.

What Sessions Feel Like

You can expect:

  • warmth and compassion
  • pacing that honours your nervous system
