A depth-oriented path to change that lasts.
Coherence Therapy is one of the core models I use in my counselling practice. It offers a powerful, experiential way to uncover the emotional roots of patterns that may be holding you back—especially the ones that feel stuck or keep coming back no matter how much insight or effort you apply. If you’ve ever found yourself saying, “I know this isn’t serving me, but I can’t seem to change it,” Coherence Therapy may help explain why—and guide you toward lasting transformation.
What Is Coherence Therapy?
Coherence Therapy is a type of depth-oriented psychotherapy that helps clients access and revise the unconscious emotional learnings driving their symptoms or unwanted behaviors. It’s based on the idea that all symptoms—whether it’s anxiety, depression, relationship issues, self-doubt, or emotional numbness—exist for a reason. They’re not signs of damage or pathology. They’re signals from deeper emotional truths that, at some point in your life, made sense and served a purpose.
These emotional “schemas” (or internal models of how the world works) often form early in life through meaningful experiences. Once formed, they live outside of everyday awareness and continue shaping how you feel, act, and relate—even if they no longer reflect your present-day reality.
Rather than trying to override or suppress these patterns, Coherence Therapy works by bringing them into awareness. When you discover and emotionally connect with the deeper reason for your current struggle—when you can actually feel and understand what your symptom is doing for you—change becomes possible. And not just surface change, but transformational, lasting change that doesn’t rely on willpower alone.Attachment research tells us:
How Does It Work?
Coherence Therapy is a structured but non-pathologizing approach. It begins with deep curiosity: What is this symptom doing for you? What part of you needs this behavior or belief to stay in place?
Together, we’ll:
- Identify the emotional learning that is driving the symptom or problem
- Bring it into awareness through experiential dialogue and imagery
- Explore the personal history and meaning that gave rise to it
- Create a vivid, side-by-side experience of conflict between that old emotional truth and your current perspective or knowledge
This final step—called memory reconsolidation—is what allows the brain to revise or erase the emotional learning that was previously “locked in.” Once this happens, the symptom no longer has a job to do. It fades, often without needing to be managed or “fixed” externally.
Clients often describe this work as emotionally liberating, surprisingly efficient, and profoundly affirming. You are not broken—you are wired to make sense of your world. Coherence Therapy helps you rewrite the emotional maps that no longer fit who you are today.
Who Is It For?
Coherence Therapy is a good fit if you:
Feel stuck in patterns you’ve tried to change but can’t
Want more than coping strategies—you want to understand the why
Struggle with anxiety, depression, shame, self-criticism, or low self-worth
Feel blocked in relationships or trapped in emotional loops
Are open to deep, experiential work that invites emotion into the room
It can be especially helpful if traditional talk therapy hasn’t gone deep enough or if you sense that something underneath your thoughts or behaviors is asking to be heard.
My Approach
I don’t use Coherence Therapy in isolation. I integrate it into a broader, trauma-informed, biopsychosocial approach to healing and growth. That means we look at your story in the context of your mind, body, relationships, and culture.
I also draw on modalities like Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Adlerian Pattern-Focused Therapy, Gestalt, CBT, and Person-Centered Psychology to meet you where you are. If a Coherence Therapy lens helps us unlock something important, we’ll follow it. If another doorway opens, we’ll walk through that one instead.
My job is not to impose a formula—it’s to walk beside you and use the tools that best serve your healing, insight, and goals.
Ready to Explore?
Coherence Therapy is not about fixing you—it’s about revealing what has always made sense inside of you, and giving that story the space it needs to transform. If you’re curious whether this approach might be right for you, I’d be honoured to talk more.
